I say that I’m going to the city, meaning Nijmegen, as I live in a village about 5 km from it. Nijmegen is also a student city due to Radboud university. It is one of the oldest city in the Netherlands but has a modern dynamic vibe. It has a summer festival with the 4 days walking (Nijmeegse vierdaagse) event where the city is on the party and festival vibes for the whole week and the walk starts always on the third Tuesday of July.
My favorite shopping street is Lange Hezelstraat, it starts from Joris Ivens plein (square) till the market place (markt). This street has some cafes, restaurants, small local clothing shops, bakery, etc. and also the entrance to St.Stephens church. I found it has its own vibes.
From Joris Ivens plein to the left to direction of the Waal river, you can find a small red-light district of Nijmegen. To the right of this square, you can find Kronenburger park with a small pond and an old tower.
The market place surrounds by the bishop palace and de waag, the old weighing (cheese) house, which is now a restaurant. Every Saturday this market hosts the traditional market selling cheese, bread, meat, fish, veggies, fruits, stroopwafel (traditional waffle syrup), etc.
From the river side, crossing the bridge to the other side of the rives, it is Veur Lent area, where the face of Nijmegen located (a giant Mask).
